HBIS Launches Low Carbon Development Technology Roadmap

March 2nd, HBIS launched its Low Carbon Development Technology Roadmap in a press conference and announced the target of low carbon development in its efforts of Carbon Peaking and Neutrality, and its 6+2 Low Carbon Technology Path. HBIS Cheif Technology Officer, Vice President Wang Xindong, HBIS SpokesmanVice President Li Yiren hosted the press conference. 

The Roadmap shows the stages of HBIS future low carbon development, Peaking plateau stage, steady reduction stage and deep decarbonization stage. HBIS will explore six technology paths and build two management platforms to reduce 10% of its peaking emission in 2025, reduce 30% in 2030 and hit the neutrality goal in 2050.

The Roadmap shows that Carbon Peaking and Neutrality will be a social and economic reform with deep impacts. Iron and steel industry is an important basic industry of the national economy, an important support for building a modern country, and an important field to achieve green and low-carbon development.

The CPC and State Council have released Complete, Accurate and Comprehensive Implementation of the New Concept of Development and Make a Good Job of Carbon Peak and Neutrality, Carbon Peak Action Plan Before 2030, to give clear timetable, roadmap and action plan of Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Ecology and Environment jointly release Guidelines on Promoting High-quality Development of Iron and Steel Industry, to clarify the guiding deology and basic principles for the high-quality development of China's steel industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, to deepen the efforts in green and low carbon development and implement the carbon peaking plan for steel industry to ensure the peaking timeline by 2030.  

Since the "13th Five-Year Plan", HBIS has been deeply implementing Xi Jinping's ecological civilization thought, earnestly implementing the new development concept, constantly strengthening responsibility, taking pollution control, optimization of layout and green transformation as the primary political task and social responsibility, promoting green, low-carbon and sustainable development of the enterprise, and achieving solid results. 

First of all, ultra-low emission is the center to lead the green development. HBIS has invested over 30.5billion Yuan to develop technology oriented green projects. More than 500 energy conservation and low emission projects have been implemented to achieve the ultra low emission of flue gas. Those leading emission indicators have effectively enhanced the implementation of ultra low emission of the steel industry of whole country. In 2020, HBIS won the Second Award of National Science and Technology Awards.     

Secondly, HBIS re-allocated its production facilities and built its HBIS Tangsteel New District, which is a green, intelligent, branding new production process steel mill. With high standards, HBIS built its HBIS Shisteel New Plant, a new generation green low carbon full-scrap - electric furnace short process steel mill. HBIS launches Zhangxuan Hightec Project to build its manufacturing capabilities of key parts of high end equipment and the hydrogen metallurgy pilot mill.

Third, HBIS accelerates the overall layout of the hydrogen energy industry chain. It will lead the energy revolution in the industry and actively explore the large-scale, concentrated and high-end development of the hydrogen energy industry. 

The fourth, HBIS is building a low carbon green industrial ecology by launching the World Steel Development Institute that balance the development of steel industry and communities. The institute is lining up the upper and downstreams of green and low carbon industry by building the Hebei CO2 Capture, Utilization and Storage Union to enhance the R&D and applications of CCUS technologies.

According to the Roadmap, HBIS will be dedicated to the double control beween the total emssion and emission intensity, and divide in three stages: carbon peaking plateau stage(2022~2025), steady reduction stage (2026~2030) and deep decarbonization stage(2031~2050).

Six technology paths are No.1, Optimizations of iron resources, including more pellet and scrap steel consumptions for long process. No.2, Production re-structure, higher ratio of full scrap EAF processand interface modification. No.3, System energy efficiency improvement, including energy conservation technologies and their applications, intelligent management systems and more self-power generation. No.4, Optimization of energy consumption structure, including green power generation and applications and green logistics. No.5, Low carbon technology reform, inclusding hydrogen metallurgy and CCUS technologies and applications.No.6, Cross-industry Low carbon efforts, including forest carbon trade, green construction materials and urban symbiosis and harmoniousness.

In addition, HBIS will focus on promoting the construction of carbon data management platform, relying on the whole-process carbon emission accounting and control platform, carry out benchmarking work within the group and the industry, and build a working mechanism of cooperative pollution reduction and carbon reduction. 

HBIS will build a product LCA management platform, build a steel product life cycle database, build a low-carbon and energy-saving green product production system, and build a green product supply chain. Through the implementation of six major carbon reduction technology paths and the construction of two major management platforms, the total carbon emission of HBIS Group in 2025 will be 10% lower than the peak, and the carbon emission intensity will be 25% lower than the peak. By 2030, total carbon emission will be 30% lower and carbon intensity 45% lower than the peak; Carbon neutrality is expected to be achieved by 2050.
